Canada’s Attitude Toward Immigrants2018-04-03
Anti-bigotry and pro-immigration are Canadian norms, says a new study by the Environics Institute for Survey Research. Canada’s attitude toward immigrants has not changed significantly, a new study says most Canadians have a positive attitude toward immigrants.
“Most immigrants are wonderful people who want to move to our country, find work and help strengthen and grow our economy,” said Calgary immigration lawyer Evelyn Ackah. “In my experience, most Canadian individuals and businesses welcome the skills and talent immigrants bring to Canada.”
This year’s study, conducted in February 2018, asked the same questions the survey has asked for 30 years and confirms that Canadian’s attitudes toward immigration have remained stable for 10 years:
- 8 in 10 say immigrants have a positive economic impact
- 6 in 10 disagree that immigration levels are too high
- more respondents believed that immigrants adopt Canadian values when compared to last year’s survey
The study also concludes that many Canadians, Albertans in particular, are skeptical about the legitimacy of refugee claims.
