I am on a student visa in Canada and have met a permanent resident who he and I would like to get married. Someone mentioned something to me about the red flag of it being a marriage of convenience. Can you tell me what does this mean? After we are married, how will I need to start the process of being a permanent resident so I can stay with him in Canada?

One of the main tests CIC uses when evaluating your sponsorship application is whether or not the marriage is primarily for immigration purposes ("marriage of convenience" as you say).

You would have to show your relationship is a legitimate one, with a period of dating, meeting each other's friends and family, activities together and so forth.

If you have that, then you have to decide whether to do an in-Canada or out-of-Canada sponsorship application.
